When you think about all eating disorders, anorexia and bulimia may come to mind first as the most common eating disorders. So, how many eating disorders are there? While these two are the most common, several other different kinds of eating disorders exist as well. Below is a guide to the different kinds of eating disorders as well as some common treatments for them.

Common Eating Disorders

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), 30 million Americans have suffered from one or more of these common eating disorders during their lifetime:

  • Anorexia Nervosa: A condition in which people “starve” themselves.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: A condition which involves binge eating followed by purging to compensate.
  • Binge Eating Disorder (BED): Like bulimia, however, those with BED overeat but don’t compensate by purging.
  • Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID): A condition which causes individuals to forego certain foods based upon their sensory perceptions of them.
  • Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED): A disorder characterized by unusual eating habits that cause significant distress but don’t fit into any other eating disorder category.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) now includes the above disorders in their eating disorder list. In addition, clinicians may also diagnose individuals with unspecified feeding or eating disorder (UFED). With UFED, individuals have characteristics of an eating disorder that don’t fall into any other category. Subsequently, doctors may not have enough information for a firm diagnosis.
